Optic Nerve Animation

Could you have glaucoma and not even know it?

By the time you notice vision loss, glaucoma has been slowly and silently causing irreversible damage to your optic nerve, the “cable” connecting your eye to your brain, allowing them to communicate. In fact, 40 percent of your optic nerve may be damaged before you notice vision loss. Unfortunately, this damage and resulting vision loss is permanent.

Damage to the optic nerve is often caused by pressure in the eye that is too high for the health of your eyes. Your eye specialist has to conduct a complete eye examination, which includes looking at the optic nerve to detect glaucoma. Treating the eye pressure reduces intraocular pressure, one of the major risk factors that can lead to glaucoma.
