Welcome to the Optic Nerve Physician Resource Center. This resource center is based upon a collaborative worldwide project and is designed to increase the awareness and demonstrate the effectiveness of imaging technology in order to enhance clinical management of glaucoma.

Glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness worldwide, represents a major public health problem. It is estimated that 79.6 million people will suffer from glaucoma in 2020, of which 58.6 million (74%) will suffer from Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG).

Glaucoma is a chronic progressive optic neuropathy. It is associated with acquired atrophy of the optic nerve and progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells and their axons, which results in vision loss. Increased intraocular pressure (IOP) is one of many risk factors for the development and progression of glaucoma.

As glaucoma is a progressive neurodegenerative disease of the optic nerve, it can present to the practitioner at various stages along the glaucoma continuum.

Assessment of both structure and function of eye structures are necessary in glaucoma. This resource center will focus on structure and the application of imaging technology across the glaucoma continuum to stage, monitor and estimate glaucoma risk. The value of these techniques is demonstrated in the interactive case studies section, which presents real, unique patient cases and allows you to provide your own assessment.

This resource center provides information on:

  • The importance and value of imaging technologies
  • Available technologies for imaging the optic disc and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL)
  • Applying imaging to stage and monitor glaucoma across the glaucoma continuum, through interactive case studies
